Melvyn started rallying way back in 1985, in an Escort MK1, competing in night events. On his second rally - The Sarn Helen Motoring News Rally - Melvyn finished 11th overall & first in class. He then progressed to an Escort Mk2, winning several events and in 1987 he won the 'Welsh Division One Road Rally Championship'.
Melvyn took a few years out to concentrate on starting his own business. On his return to rallying in a Escort MK2 Gp4, Melvyn turned to stage events. After the Gp4 Escort, Melvyn purchased and ex-factory Prodrive built BMW M3, after numerous class wing in National Rallies, he sold the BMW for a Ford Escort Cosworth GpA, on his second rally in the GpA Melvyn won the event - Harry Flatters on the Eppynt Ranges, Nr Brecon.
By now the rally bug had really bitten and Melvyn replace his GpA Escort for an ex-Msport Escort WRC again winning rallies, a year down the road Melvyn bought a later spec Escort WRC and contested the Get Connected Championship in 2002, during the season Melvyn won the West Cork Rally in Ireland and also the Manx Rally on the Isle of Man and also eventually managed to take the Get Connected Championship title.
In 2003 Melvyn parted company with the Escort and bought his first Subaru Impreza '98 WRC an ex-Possum Bourne/Colin McRae, yet again winning The Mewla Stages on Eppynt. In January 2004 Melvyn has upgraded his '98 Subaru to an ex-Richard Burns Subaru Impreza P2000 and won his first event on Epynt in his 1st rally in a left hand drive car. He then went on to do the manx rally where he was contesting for the win on day 1 but on day 2 melvyn suffered various problems to drop to 10th by the end.
Later in the year Melvyn purchased a s7 (2001) ex-Richard Burns model Subaru Impreza Wrc wherebhis best finish was 5th on the Ravens Rock Rallybut suffered a lot of problems along the course of the year including a massive spin on the mewla where he was lucky to escape.
In 2005 Melvyn got some better fortune finishing most of the rallies he contested in the Dunlop championship in the early part of the year finishing from 4th to 7th consistently but on the Manx international he slid off the road on the penultimate stage and damaged his gearbox forcing him to re-build the gearbox, this however made melvyn decide to put a paddle shift gear change in the car and it turned out well winning the tour of Epynt for the 2nd year running and finishing 4th on the fastnet skibbereen rally only a timeloss on the last stage costing him a podium.
In 2006 Melvyn continued with the same car winning the West Cork and Ravens Rock rally outright in Ireland and securing the southern 4 national title in the process. He also finished a pleasing 3rd on the Manx National rally.
Heading In to 2007 Melvyn had bought Steve Fleck's old S9(2003) Impreza Wrc winning his 1st event on Epynt but 6 competitors were excluded for not having supplied a fuel sample but the organiser did not have the kit to carry out the procedure, and the owner of the place did not let it happen because it was a pet food production area wich was a bad end to a dangerously wet Epynt day. Melvyn suffered problems with the car throughout the year.
This year Melvyn bought an S11 (2005) Subaru Wrc and won his 1st 2 events and it looked like he was going to make it 3 but Melvyns car wouldn't re-start in service and was forced to retire.
Melvyn is now into rally car preperation:-
Over the last few years Melvyn has ran many cars on events and all being successful the latest cars he has ran has been James Belton in a 1999 spec Subaru Impreza WRC winning the Swansea Bay Clubmans rally, and Simon Rogers 2nd in the same event driving a Mitsubishi Lancer, in the past Melvyn has ran David Armstrong from Ireland, Paul Bourne in Melvyn's old s9 car from Barbados winning his first event with John Powell in 2nd, another driver being ran by Melvyn Evans Motorsport.
